Free PPCM Workshop – BSW (Waco, TX)

You're Invited to a Life-Saving Event


Join us in Waco, Texas for an in-person workshop focused on Peripartum Cardiomyopathy (PPCM) — a serious, often undiagnosed heart condition affecting women during and after pregnancy. This empowering event is designed to equip birth workers and community members with life-saving education, tools, and resources.

PPCM is a leading cause of maternal deaths in the United States, according to Penn Medicine and other sources. The American Heart Association Journals notes that at least 10% of maternal deaths in the US are due to PPCM.

  • Introduction to PPCM and Cardiovascular Health in Pregnancy
    Overview of Peripartum Cardiomyopathy, its symptoms, risk factors, and impact on maternal health. Understanding the importance of cardiovascular health during pregnancy.


  • Recognizing Early Warning Signs of PPCM
    Training birth workers to identify early symptoms of PPCM and differentiate them from common pregnancy-related conditions. Emphasis on early detection and the importance of timely medical intervention.


  • Supporting Women at Risk for PPCM
    Strategies for providing emotional, physical, and educational support to women at risk for PPCM. This includes how to discuss PPCM with clients and create a supportive care plan.


  • Collaborating with Healthcare Providers
    Best practices for doulas in working alongside obstetricians, midwives, and cardiologists. Understanding the role of a doula in a multidisciplinary care team and advocating for the client's needs.


  • Postpartum Care and Monitoring for PPCM Survivors
    Guidance on caring for women who have been diagnosed with PPCM postpartum. Monitoring symptoms, supporting recovery, and navigating the challenges of motherhood while managing a heart condition.


  • Emergency Preparedness and Response
    Preparing birth workers to respond to cardiac emergencies during pregnancy, birth, or postpartum. This includes recognizing life-threatening symptoms and ensuring timely medical intervention.


  • Empowering Clients Through Education and Advocacy
    Teaching birth workers how to empower their clients by providing accurate information about PPCM and advocating for comprehensive care. This includes resources for continued education and support networks for PPCM survivors.
